Where a conventional transmitter gives an analogue output of 4-20 mA, a Smart transmitter is processor-based and can use digital communication. In other words, a Smart transmitter gives a digital output, which combined with the makers software can create a variety of digital data where the conventional transmitter can only give one sort of output (4 - 20mA).
