Stringent Emission Controls on Boilers

For several years, boilers have been subjected to strict emission controls. These controls are primarily focused on limiting emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and particulates. All the above emissions contribute to environmental pollution and are globally recognized as a major cause of the greenhouse effect.
As well as external steam boilers on ships traditionally use Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO), which has a relatively high sulfur content. Over the past years, the IMO has tightened regulations regarding sea pollution. As a result of the regulations, all existing "steam generators and supplied combustion instruments for burning HFO must be modified to enable the burning of low sulfur distillate fuel when the ship is sailing in European waters.
